The Focal Point in a Garden
Creating an inviting and warm garden environment using objects and furniture
to provide focal points of interest.
A focal point is something that draws attention; it is a place where the eye
naturally comes to rest. A well-designed patio always has a planned focal point,
such as a fountain, a large dining set, or a stone table with a fancy umbrella.
A patio's focal point could also be anything that stands out; a special object
or a feature of the landscape, such as a winding pathway into the trees, a rose
bed, a special tree, a dramatic view, or a bird bath.
Consistency of Style
Patio furniture, such as a table and chairs, often serves as a natural focal
point. If you already have patio furniture and plan to add a large outdoor
dining set, keep the styles consistent. Also, be aware of the overall theme of
your patio or garden. A contemporary table and chairs may look out of place if
the overall theme is rustic. The rule is to have one style of décor.
Color Selection
The colors of the furniture and cushions should be selected with care. Visualize
the furniture where it will be used. The colors should complement the
surroundings or blend in with them. They should not overwhelm or clash with the
surroundings.
Umbrellas and Lounges
An umbrella might look odd in a covered area, but it might look well in a
screened-in area that is exposed to direct sunlight. If you buy an umbrella
separate from your garden furniture, be sure the color and any patterns go well
with your furniture as well as the surroundings.
An umbrella with its own stand by a pair of chaise lounges could be an
attractive focal point. The cushions on the chaise lounges and the material of
the umbrella should either match or complement each other.
Statues and Fountains
A statue, fountain, or other ornament can be used as a focal point. However,
you’ll want to keep in mind that the statue should be proportional to its
surroundings, go with the style of the house, and the décor of the patio. A
large statue of the god Jupiter, for example, probably wouldn’t go well in a
patio with Western décor. On the other hand, a statue of Venus in a garden with
traditional English décor would be pleasing. A graceful statue adds an air of
serenity.
You don’t want to overpower the garden with a statue that is too large for the
space. An agreeable placement for a nicely-sized statue is in front of a wall of
stone or brick with climbing plants. A statue should never be placed in
isolation; it should be positioned where it can become a part of its
surroundings.
These are a few examples of focal points in a patio or garden among endless
possibilities. The important thing to remember is that the focal point should
blend in with the environment harmoniously. |
